Pregnancy Reflexology

Reflexology is a gentle and relaxing therapy, and works on pressure points in the feet and hands, that are connected to areas of the body. Controlled pressure is applied to these pressure points, easing discomfort and imbalances in the corresponding areas of the body, allowing the whole body to be treated through the feet.

It is a treatment that can be continued throughout the duration of the pregnancy at a time when your body goes through significant changes; changes that will affect the emotional, hormonal and physiological balance of your body. Reflexology can help to alleviate or prevent discomfort arising from this imbalance and restore the body’s equilibrium.

Reflexology is very beneficial and can be used safely throughout pregnancy. If you have had reflexology before, then treatments can be continued throughout the pregnancy, from conception to postnatal care.

However, if you have never had a reflexology treatment before, it is recommended that you wait until your second trimester before starting treatment. In addition, please consult your doctor before receiving treatment.

There is a suggestion that women who have regular reflexology treatments during pregnancy are more likely to have a shorter labour and require less pain relief, achieve co-ordination and acceleration of regular contractions and have a lower risk of retaining the placenta.  It is impossible to tell if this would have been different if they had not had treatment, but it may be worth a try….

Reflexology can also help to alleviate postnatal problems and help with breastfeeding.
